Internship Opportunity

Seeking a student intern or part-time volunteer with Marketing background to assist Executive Director of Postpartum Education and Support. This position is unpaid but will give valuable experience in working with a community nonprofit on a variety of projects, including fundraising, marketing, educational outreach, and multiple-media networking. Benefits include completed pieces for professional portfolio; letter of recommendation for future employment; and opportunity to work with a dynamic and active Board of Directors. Specific duties: work with the Executive Director to develop marketing materials, including a quarterly newsletter, emails for group members, brochures, and website content; help with development of a targeted social media campaign to raise awareness about PES’s programs to help women with Postpartum Mood Disorders; assist ED and Volunteer Coordinator with set-up of new database, including entering existing data into system. Hours are flexible and based on projects rather than weekly hours. Time frame is also flexible; this can be a summer internship or established for a set number of months.

Required:
• Marketing and design experience
• Will need to have personal computer
• Ability to work independently and to be a self-starter; most work will be done from home
• Organizational skills, including demonstrated attention to detail
• Excellent written communication skills

The Director of Student Engagment, Cameron Hill needs your help! She has 2 graphic design student opportunities and wants to know if you're interested in taking on the challenge:

She is seeking a student to design orientation promotional materials for this summer: pacer camp, transfer transitions, pathways shirts, as well as an orientation bag they giveaway
Seeking student(s) to serve as the graphic designer for the Campus Activities Board next year. This person would create monthly calendars, promotional materials for fall cocktail, fall fest week, little sibs weekend, red rose ball, etc. (shirts, invites, posters, etc.)

Senior Portfolio Exhibition and Student Showcase - this Thursday!

“Student Showcase: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creativity” is an annual event at Peace College which allows students and other members of the Peace community to experience the richness of students’ endeavors. This is the sixth year of the campus wide event in which students will share with each other their academic and artistic accomplishments. It includes gallery exhibitions, research presentations, performances of music and dance, poetry readings and debates.

The Graphic Design Department exhibition will be displayed in the Pressley Gallery (until the end of the month) with the Senior Portfolio Review held outside of Pressley 303 between 10am-11am. Stop by and meet the talented creative graduates and their portfolios!

Art for Animals 2010

The National Anti-Vivisection Society’s Art for Animals 2010 is underway! Artists, photographers, painters, graphic artists, poets, musicians, and filmmakers of all ages are invited to compete in this annual art contest. Your work of art could be chosen to illustrate NAVS’ publications, posters, cards, stationery, and website. And if that’s not enough motivation, there are also cash awards - NAVS recognizes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in three age categories, as well as Best in Show and Best Photograph!

Art for Animals provides an opportunity for artists to give a creative and compelling voice to those who suffer silently in the name of science and to send a creative message about respect, justice and compassion for animals. And remember: Art for Animals makes a great class project for students of all ages.

Poster Contest for Young Voters Announced: $200 First Prize

The State Board of Elections and several nonpartisan groups are conducting a poster contest to promote voter registration among young people in North Carolina. The winning poster will be reproduced and distributed to high schools, local election officials, and civic groups for voter education and registration efforts. Learn more about the contest here.

Goal: Create a poster with a catchy slogan and graphic design that inspires teenagers as young as 16 to register to vote! The final poster will be 17 x 22 inches and printed in full color (CMYK).
In addition to the overall slogan, the poster should highlight (or leave space for text that highlights) two points:

You can register to vote if you are at least 16 and a US citizen.
You can vote in the primary and general election if you register and if you will be at least 18 on the Election Day in November.

Background: A new law in North Carolina allows citizens to register to vote as young as 16 year old. The voting age does not change, but early registration (or pre-registration) for 16 year olds makes sense, because that’s the age when most teenagers take Civics in high school or visit the DMV to get a driver’s license, where they will be asked if they want to register.

Prizes: The winner of the contest will receive $200. The runner-up will receive $100. Representatives of the State Board of Elections, Democracy North Carolina, NC Civic Education Consortium, NC Center for Voter Education, and Kids Voting NC will be the final judges.

Rules for Submission: Only North Carolina residents age 16 to 19 are eligible to submit an entry for the contest and they must affirm that they alone are the creator of the poster submitted. Eligible teenagers may work together as a team to submit an entry (and divide the prize money if they win).

Submitting Your Entry: The entry may be submitted electronically (as a PDF or JPG file) to postercontest@democracy-nc.org or in hard copy to:

The entry must be accompanied with the contact information for the poster creator, including name, age, full address, email, phone number, grade and school attending, guardian’s name and phone number, and, if relevant, contact information for a teacher-adviser.

The deadline for all entries is midnight, April 15, 2010. The winner will be announced by May 1.
The State Board of Elections and Democracy North Carolina reserve the right to modify the poster, in consultation with the winner, to include contact information and other pertinent details.

We had a great turnout for the opening of the “Be Graphic > Make a Difference” exhibition during April’s First Friday in downtown Raleigh. Don’t worry if you missed the festivities though, the show continues through April 23rd (weekdays 12pm-6pm) at DesignBox on 323 West Martin Street Gallery.

Carolina Gallery's Photography Invitational

Carolina Gallery in Spartanburg, SC is calling for entries in a competition resulting in a Photography Invitational Exhibition in June in downtown Spartanburg. The competition is open to all professional and amateur photographers age 18 or over, currently residing in North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia. Deadline for receipt of Entry form and 5 images on CD or DVD is May 6, 2010. Selected photographers will be invited to participate in a juried show and compete for awards. A total of $4,000 in prizes will be awarded. Best of Show will receive $1,500 and a fine art photography website for one year.

Sean Adams: AdamsMorioka, A Very Special Episode

Join AIGA Raleigh for an evening of insight and inspiration with Sean Adams, as he discusses the evolution of the AdamsMorioka brand. He will talk in depth about their self-promotion practices and how that relates to business.

As he describes it, “This will be a frank and honest discussion answering some of the questions I've heard over the years. How did we start? Is it true we're media whores? If so, how did we do it? How do we decide what to work on? Has Noreen ever abused me? And any other question you may have, but would be afraid to ask.”

Sean Adams has been recognized by every major competition and publication — from Communication Arts and Graphis to AIGA and the New York Art Director’s Club.

AdamsMorioka has been exhibited often including a solo exhibition at The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Sean is President ex officio and past national board member of AIGA, and President ex officio of AIGA Los Angeles. He teaches at Art Center College of Design, is a frequent lecturer and competition judge internationally, and has been cited as one of the 40 most important people shaping design internationally in the ID40.

Please note that Hillsborough Street is under construction. The entrance at Pullen Road and Western Blvd entrance may be more convenient. Parking is available in the lot next Kamphoefner Hall on Boney Street.

Be Graphic: Make a Difference

On Friday April 2nd, Designbox (323 West Martin Street, Raleigh, NC) will welcome local Peace College Graphic Design students for a juried exhibition showcasing the power of Social Justice.

In an era afflicted by poverty, disease, hunger, homelessness, market crashes, and unemployment, one may wonder how change may come about. Using this gallery as a medium to promote thoughtful action, local students demonstrate their commitment to using design as an agent for positive social change. They use graphic design to attack serious social justice issues with vision and passion. Images and posters depict issues from all around the globe and function as a "call to action." The show encourages community involvement, asking each of us to see ourselves as agents of positive change.

We will be exhibiting (and selling) these Social Justice posters as the big part of the show, but we'll also have an interactive poster signage exhibit. The basic concept is everyone getting a chance to make there own sign with their cause: joy, scream, bitch/moan - then display it to the world real-time.

We will have a table to design, sketch, then display, then photo-booth your poster/signage creations. A real-time collection of all the created signs will be projected during the show. There will be props close by: wigs, hats and toy weapons in a box to help emphasize the cause.

We look forward to seeing you on April 2nd for the exhibition opening. It should be an awesome warm 1st Friday!

Rebekah Jacob Gallery is organizing an emerging artist exhibition entitled "Present Tense." This exhibition will showcase the work of the emerging talent of the Southeast. They are looking for students and artists to apply. Each artist may enter only 5-10 images. Open to any style, subject, or medium: painting, works on paper, photography, and video.

Dual/focus Exhibit at Block Gallery!

Dual/focus exhibition, exploring the roots of photography and printmaking, will be on view at Raleigh's Block Gallery (located on the first two floors of the municipal building) through March 22. Raleigh Arts Commission announces Block2! Block2 is a large projection screen currently located at the Urban Design Center, 133 Fayetteville Street. For the next six months, Block2 will be featuring video work of local artists, curated by Neill Prewitt (pictured at left). Video work will be visible on the screen from dusk to midnight.

Scrap to Sculpture Contest

An adventure in Creativity & Conscious

In celebration of Earth Day 2010 and in an effort to increase awareness of the importance of recycling, Cameron Village is pleased to announce an opportunity for sculptural creative expression. Prizes will be awarded based on interpretation of "An adventure in Creativity and Conscious" and adherence to the contest parameters.

Entry forms must be submitted by April 2 to receive an assigned "build space" within Cameron Village. Build spaces are limited. Entry forms are available at www.shopcameronvillage.com. For all accepted entries, Cameron Village will provide a $100 creative allowance to be used at the Scrap Exchange in Durham.

Individual high school and college students - and/or groups of students are eligible to enter.
First place = $1,000
Second place = $750
Third place = $500

Artwork

Please be made from at least 80% recyclable materials
Please be able to withstand the elements for two weeks
Please be at least 3 feet wide x 5 feet tall
Please be family friendly both in content and materials

Another Tote Bag Design Contest

The Strand Book Store is partnering with the School of Visual Arts, Drawn & Quarterly and Fantagraphics Books and Toon Books to host a tote bag design contest.

Beginning March 1, 2010, artists from around the world are invited to submit original illustrations featuring the Strand Book Store.

In June 2007, the Strand unveiled the first Artist Tote Bag: Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman loaned his iconic Maus image for the first time ever to celebrate the Strand's 80th birthday. The Strand then partnered with artists each year, including Adrian Tomine, Seth and R. Sikoryak, creating the Strand's Artist Tote Series. Now, the Strand Book Store wants to give emerging artists the opportunity to have their artwork featured on a Strand tote bag.

The Haiti Tap-Tap Benefit - Saturday March 13th

The Haiti Tap-Tap Benefit is both an opportunity to raise relief money for Haitians affected by the recent tragedy and an evening dedicated to celebrating the vibrant culture of the Haitian people. The evening’s fundraising event is named for the “tap-tap” buses that provide public transportation in Haitian cities. All are elaborately decorated with bright colors and other creative embellishments, which often stands in stark contrast with some of the bleak city blocks in Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien.

The uniquely customized tap-taps will be on display at the benefit and will be available for purchase as part of a silent auction. The benefit will also feature a variety of native Haitian paintings, prints, crafts, photography as well as a collection of goods and services from local businesses that will be available for silent auction. As part of the benefit celebration, DJ Jerry Thompson will be playing a selection of traditional and popular Haitian music throughout the evening. The event will also feature a sampling of tradition Haitian dishes that will be prepared by chefs in the Raleigh area. This will truly provide a unique experience of authentic Haitian art, food and music.

Join in an evening to celebrate Haiti’s rich and colorful culture, to enjoy the country’s vivid expressions in music and art, and to appreciate the showcase of tap-taps – both the namesake of tonight’s benefit and a symbol of the Haitian peoples’ resiliency, resourcefulness, and vibrancy.

"Organasthetic," an art exhibition and reception to benefit this scholarship program for high school seniors pursuing a career in the arts, will be hosted by Ambiente International on Thursday, February 18, 6 - 10 p.m. The exhibition features work of visual artists Mia Yoon, Paul Friedrich, Steve Staresina and Lee Tripi, and the event will also feature recording artist Jenn Mundia.
