Another Tote Bag Design Contest

The Strand Book Store is partnering with the School of Visual Arts, Drawn & Quarterly and Fantagraphics Books and Toon Books to host a tote bag design contest.

Beginning March 1, 2010, artists from around the world are invited to submit original illustrations featuring the Strand Book Store.

In June 2007, the Strand unveiled the first Artist Tote Bag: Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman loaned his iconic Maus image for the first time ever to celebrate the Strand's 80th birthday. The Strand then partnered with artists each year, including Adrian Tomine, Seth and R. Sikoryak, creating the Strand's Artist Tote Series. Now, the Strand Book Store wants to give emerging artists the opportunity to have their artwork featured on a Strand tote bag.

Design a tote for charity! Deadline: March 15

Design really can make a difference: For Print Magazine's June issue, 12 leading visual artists, including Ed Fella, Christoph Niemann, and büro destruct, are creating a design for tote bags that will be sold on MyDesignShop.com. One hundred percent of the profits from these bags will go to causes chosen by the artists.

Now you can join these top designers—choose a cause you'd like to support, and create a design for it that can be printed on a tote bag. One winner will have his or her creation turned into a real bag—and will also get to take home one of the designer-made totes in the issue. Do good design—and do good!

The Haiti Tap-Tap Benefit - Saturday March 13th

The Haiti Tap-Tap Benefit is both an opportunity to raise relief money for Haitians affected by the recent tragedy and an evening dedicated to celebrating the vibrant culture of the Haitian people. The evening’s fundraising event is named for the “tap-tap” buses that provide public transportation in Haitian cities. All are elaborately decorated with bright colors and other creative embellishments, which often stands in stark contrast with some of the bleak city blocks in Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien.

The uniquely customized tap-taps will be on display at the benefit and will be available for purchase as part of a silent auction. The benefit will also feature a variety of native Haitian paintings, prints, crafts, photography as well as a collection of goods and services from local businesses that will be available for silent auction. As part of the benefit celebration, DJ Jerry Thompson will be playing a selection of traditional and popular Haitian music throughout the evening. The event will also feature a sampling of tradition Haitian dishes that will be prepared by chefs in the Raleigh area. This will truly provide a unique experience of authentic Haitian art, food and music.

Join in an evening to celebrate Haiti’s rich and colorful culture, to enjoy the country’s vivid expressions in music and art, and to appreciate the showcase of tap-taps – both the namesake of tonight’s benefit and a symbol of the Haitian peoples’ resiliency, resourcefulness, and vibrancy.

AAF-RDU proudly presents a powerful film about advertising and inspiration, Art & Copy. It reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time — George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and many others. These are people who've impacted our culture — their work is endlessly discussed, dissected and debated the Monday after the Super Bowl — while almost completely unknown outside their industry.

Font Aid for Haiti

Font Aid IV is a project to raise money to help the recovery efforts in Haiti after this past month’s devastating earthquake. SOTA (Society of Typographic Aficionados), which is a US-based nonprofit, is acting as organizer. The way it works is much like the three previous Font Aid efforts: type designers contribute one character each to a special font, which is then sold to benefit the needy cause. This time, the special font will consist entirely of ampersands; ostensibly this is because of the theme “Coming Together,” though I’m sure it can’t hurt that ampersands are fun to draw and easy to find a use for. All proceeds from sales of the font will go to Doctors Without Borders.

To participate: Submit a black and white "ampersand" icon for the benefit font. It should be a vector image file, not a bitmap. Keep it simple, not too crazy. Send it in EPS format to fontaid@typesociety.org by tomorrow at midnight (EST).

Paid poster design opportunity ($150)

Peace College has partnered with Raleigh Wake Human Resource Management Association (RWHRMA) to provide their members discounts on our adult continuing education courses.

The Peace College Adult HR program would love a student to develop a poster highlighting the benefits of joining RWHRMA which would also prominently list Peace College as sponsor of the poster. This poster would be displayed at their monthly meetings on an easel and anywhere else where they wanted to recruit new members (such as the statewide conference once per year).

They are willing to pay a graphic design student an honorarium of $150 to work on the poster and have asked interested students to let me know. Based on the amount of interest, you may need to show a few samples of your design work to help them decide on the best fit for the project. Sound like something you might be interested in?
